Transition from Gaming to Film
a case study
A successful video game does not guarantee a successful movie.

The brief:
A major Hollywood movie studio wanted to create a movie about a popular videogame franchise. The challenge was that this had been done countless times without real success, often leaving both gamers and movie-goers disappointed.

A major Hollywood movie studio wanted to create a movie about a popular videogame franchise. The challenge was that this had been done countless times without real success, often leaving both gamers and movie-goers disappointed.
The work:
MoStrategy conducted a digital ethnography study with avid gamers, and a series of online focus groups with movie-goers to explore the emotional and narrative territory of the franchise. Using de-constructivist techniques, we understood which parts of the franchise were truly sacrosanct, and where there was license—even appetite—for exploration.
The movie was a box office success, and the sequel is currently in production.
